take me thereSpotted: a very festive looking Long Dog! Recreate a classic Christmas dessert with this Yule Log Long Dog recipe by Tigga Mac.
Note: Make sure a grown up helps with the small pieces, preparation and baking.
.
Time to create your yule log, long dog! Ensuring your yule log is chilled and firm, place it with the flat side down on to the bench. Using a small sharp knife, carefully carve into the ends of the cake to create the head and the bottom of the dog!
.
Pipe a thick, generous line of buttercream onto the centre of your cake board, this will be the glue that holds your cake in place. It will also help to slightly elevate the yule log off the cake board, allowing room for the dog’s legs. Place the yule log onto the buttercream, securing it in place. Chill the cake in the fridge for 10 minutes to set.
Cover the entire cake in chocolate brown buttercream, smoothing out with a palette knife. For an extra smooth finish, apply a crumb coat followed by a second coat. Chill in the fridge for 10 minutes to set.
Place your large round tip nozzle into a piping bag and fill with brown buttercream. If you don’t have a piping tip, just cut a large hole in your piping bag) Pipe four thick blobsof buttercream at the base of the cake to create the legs of the dog.
Using a small palette knife smooth out the tops of the legs to blend into the dog’s body. To create the tail, pipe in an upwards motion using more pressure at the base and reducing the pressure as you move upwards to create a pointed end. Gently smooth and blend the base of the tail with a palette knife and chill in the fridge for at least 15 minutes or until firm.
Colour your remaining buttercream a darker brown. Fill a separate piping bag with dark brown buttercream. You can use a small round piping tip for this, or go without if you don’t have one. and cut a small hole in the end. Pipe a round circle on the end of the dogs head to create the nose, smooth out with a palette knife. Using the same technique, pipe a circle on the dog’s back to create a patch, once again smoothing out with a palette knife .
Pipe a “U” shape on either side of the dog to create the ears. Pipe a smaller “U” shape to create the eyes and lastly pipe two lines below the nose to create the dogs mouth! To make your yule dog feel festive, pop on a Santa hat!
